Vaastu Home Design

Vaastu—the mantra for your home

In India, the science of architecture has evolved since ancient times. Vastu Shastra is the knowledge of physical environment and applies to elements in a dwelling, that work in harmony with nature, environ, cosmic and magnetic fields and planetary influences, which when used rightly are believed to lead to sound health, wealth and prosperity. In ancient times, Vastu was a popular science, which covered a broad arena of important fields like architecture, civil engineering, kingdoms (Raja Prasadas), design, sculpture, temple, and building technology. It is a popular myth that Viswakarma, the greatest architect of Mahabharata times had designed and built Indraprastha (capital of the Pandavas) integrating the elements of Vaastu in the town layout.

Today, Vastu Shastra is widely used in different aspects of design and building, adhering to physical and cosmic forces by merging sound elements in design and architecture, as also introducing elements in the living and working space at homes and offices. To create harmony between living beings and the fine elements of the environment, Vastu follows some set of rules based on ancient wisdom. Some people also believe that Vastu is based in a belief that solar, lunar and planetary influences affect life on earth. The elements considered important in Vastu are the Panchbhutas (five elements of nature)—Fire, Water, Earth, Cosmos & Air.

During the last decade, Vastu and Feng Shui have gained popularity in the West. Defining Vastu for ‘one and all’ is not practical, for each house is different and has its own schemes and set up. However, there some general rules that Vastu advises to avoid friction and merge with nature and universal harmony, leading to a healthy state of mind, body and soul. Here are some rules for sleeping,

Sleeping directions

To avoid stress and create harmony with all living elements and cosmic energy, Vastu recommends certain positions for life-long health and sound sleep.

  • East: Considered as a direction for knowledge and spirituality. It says that sleeping with one’s head in the East improves physical and mental health. Students and children are advised to sleep with their heads facing the East.

  • West: Not a good position for anyone. Vastu says sleeping with one's head in the west leads to nightmares, bad dreams and a disturbed sleep pattern, may also lead to a violent nature.

  • North: Sleeping with one’s head in the North direction may lead to fear and sleeplessness, and also major illness.

  • South: South is the best direction for sleeping. Sleeping with one's head in the south brings happiness and sound sleep. It also leads to increment in wealth and prosperity.

These are just a few examples of Vastu. There are others like using light colors on the walls, using West direction for study, including an open space in the Northeast of a home, and to avoid arranging beds under the joint in the roof or beneath a beam.
